Disclosure of the SES and ESMF for the GEF low carbon electric bus project

March 30, 2022

In January 2022, The Global Environment Facility (GEF) endorsed a full-sized project: “Promoting Low Carbon Public Bus Transport in Mauritius”.  The GEF is providing USD 5.6 million grants to the Government of Mauritius over a period of six years to promote capital investments into developing sustainable transport infrastructure to reduce transport-related GHG emissions in the country to mitigate climate change; engage and build technical capacities of transport-related policymakers, regulatory and other government agencies, financial institutions and the private sector.

With the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the project will be implemented by the Ministry of Land Transport and Light Rail.  In line with the UNDP safeguards policy, a social and environmental assessment was carried out while preparing the project, which rated the project as a substantial risk.  To manage the identified risks, an environmental and social management framework has been developed and is hereby being disclosed for public comments for a period of 120 days.  Any comments and feedback may be sent to: registry.mu@undp.org
