UNDP in Seychelles

Seychelles is an archipelago of 116 islands and 455 sq km located in the north of Madagascar. The country has the highest gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in Africa ($15,410 in 2016) and 70% of its gross domestic product, and more than 90% of its exports, depend on natural, pristine, diverse and productive terrestrial and marine ecosystem services for tourism and fisheries. These factors have made it imperative to adopt robust conservation and adaptation policies, and the Government of Seychelles continues to push for sustainable development and environmental protection promoting adaptation and mitigation measures.

Our plan

UNDP is supporting the government of Seychelles towards planning and implementing a strategic policy intervention in the area of environment, climate change and inclusive development. This has made UNDP-led support towards the realization of development plans such as the blue economy strategy and others.
The objectives of UNDP are to improve the lives of the people of Mauritius and Seychelles, especially the poorest and most vulnerable, and to ensure a future that offers equality, dignity and opportunity for all.
The UNDP country programme is anchored in government priorities – as outlined in the Seychelles sustainable development strategy, the national development strategy, the sustainable development goals, and the Samoa Pathway – and is aligned to the UNDP strategic plan. The programme will bring significant added value in high-level upstream policy support to aspects of sustainable development investments, as well as continuing with broad sustainable development goals advocacy across all sectors. Investment will continue to strengthen the capacities of national actors, systems and institutions, through targeted policy interventions and translation of the sustainable development goals at the national level, to accelerate growth and safeguard development gains. Partnerships and networks to implement and monitor national initiatives will be fundamental principles.
